Chapter 17 Blog (Question #3)
For instance, the Janet Jackson incident. I believe would hurt FOX News’ reputation because many families watch the Super Bowl together and I sure wouldn’t want my children being exposed to that type of advertising. Although, I do believe the GoDaddy.com commercial shouldn’t have been banned the second time because it was not out to hurt anyone so I don’t quite know what FOX News was thinking, especially after they used the woman in the commercial for their own commercial. I believe their decision not to air it a second time did not hurt GoDaddy.com in the least bit. GoDaddy.com seemed to have a good reputation and they have seemed as though they generated enough publicity in the commercial air time the first time around.
I do believe that since the Janet Jackson incident, FOX News’ reputation has taken a dive. So using designed strategies, like approval of commercial first is a good step in the right decision.
Examples
WWE Wrestling- I believe they use design strategies when it come to any of their wrestlers who have been suspended. When this happens, they stop advertising about them on their website. This also happened when one of their wrestlers committed suicide and they took him off of all their advertisements and stopped selling his clothes on their website. I believe they do this so their audience can still have their favorite wrestler and not have to have negative thoughts about him. This especially works well for their young audience; they do not need to hear any of the adult content that deals with their favorite wrestlers.
I found an interesting article on dui.com. In the article, Tennessee’s Senator wants to ban all advertisements for Attorneys whose specialty is defending drunk drivers. These attorneys guarantee their clients that they will get them off of the charges against them. The Senator feels this is giving the attorney’s clients false hope. It is also letting people know that if they do get caught, nothing will happen to them.
Here is the website that the article can be found at:

I thought of one other example of designed strategies about cable networks banning the advertisements for smoking on their network. I believe this works well for children’s cable networks because they are not allowing children to assume that smoking is good for them. As I recall there are no commercials for cigarettes on any type of network; however, I do remember seeing one that explain the risks about smoking. I believe this works well because there are so many businesses who once allowed smoking in their building but now they don’t. This does sometimes work in their favorite, but some businesses like taverns and restaurants, I believe take a hit because many people smoke after they eat or while they are drinking.

Chapter 16 Sales Promotion
For this sales promotion, Walmart Portrait Studio is trying to get their customer to order pictures by a specfic date by using a coupon. They also have a coupon. They even added a coupon to hand to a friend.
I difinitely believe that the Pepsi Compnay has done an exceptional job designing their sales promotions. I don't know about anyone else, but when I go purchase a soda---I always look for the ones with the orange caps so I can have the chance to win items. Consumers love to win free things---so I have to say that their sales promotion tool is every affective.
This coupon is for a second hand store where would purchase $100 worth of merchadise and then receive $10 free of merchandise. I believe this isn't as affective as the other two since not everyone shops at these types of stores. I do not go there often but when I do, I make sure I buy at least $10 worth of merchanside so my card can be punched. This coupon reminds me of the Kwik Trip one for milk---I think the Kwik Trip card is more affective because more people buy milk and they ask if you have a milk card. The second hand store doesn't remind you---you have to remind yourself. So half the time I forget that I even have it until I get back home and then it makes me mad.
I believe that no matter what the sales promotion is---it could work for one person and not another. Not everyone shops at the same stores or buys the same items---so it all depends on a person's life and their need at the moment.

Chapter 14- Question 10 (Page 465)
Factors Contributing to Growth of Direct-Marketing:
· The U.S. Postal Service has expanded from previous years and is able to keep up with direct-marketing mail.
· Companies being able to accept credit cards for payment.
· Direct-marketing offers many opportunities through other organizations.
· One of the main reasons I believe direct marketing has become so popular because Americans are changing their ways. They have dual-income families and different values on the outlook of their lives. Such as, the growth of doing things for themselves and the interest in fitness.
· In addition, technology keeps changing, making it easier for people to shop online. Companies are able to increase the chance of reaching their target market.
· There are many other reasons for the growth, such as the increased ways of doing marketing and the improved image of certain industries.
Relevant today-why or why not? Impact on future.
I believe many of them are relevant today such as technology advancing. This will always be a concept when dealing with any type of advertising. There is so much more that companies are able to do to market their products/services. Graphics have come a long way since the past. I also believe the way consumers are changing is one of the biggest aspects. Companies need to make sure they always give their customers what they want. They need to change as consumers’ interests, preferences, and values change. Without the capability of technology changing, companies would not be able to meet consumers’ expectations. All of the above factors have a major impact on direct-marketing because as with everything in the world today, things are changing. Companies need to be able to adjust to change and be willing to change. In addition, companies need to be diverse in their direct-marketing techniques because it could make or break their company’s success. I believe the ability to work with other organizations is a good way to reach a company’s target market.

Chapter 12- Question 4
Target Market
The target market I chose was people trying to live healthier lives by eating right and exercising. This target market has no age group to choose from. In addition, all types of lifestyles are included in this target market. The concept that stands out is the fact that they want to live healthier lives.
Magazines
Advertisers would use consumer magazines to place their ads in. This way, they can pick specific magazines that their target market would read. In doing this, they will be able to keep their costs down; won’t be wasting money on ads in the wrong magazines. Advertisers can cross-magazine their ads. This means that they can place their ads in a variety of magazines that their target market would be interested in. A few of these magazines could be Women’s Health, Cooking Light, Fitness, and Weight Watchers.
In addition, consumer magazines are flexible in the size, color, and placement of the ads their advertisers place in their magazines. These types of magazines offer special advertising features to their advertisers. These can include gatefolds, which are ads that fold out of the magazine. They also allow them to use bleeds, which are advertisements that fill up the entire page. However, the latter two options cost a little bit more than regular ad options.
Furthermore, using consumer magazines to advertise, the readers are willing to accept ads more than any other type of media. Many readers look at ads just as much as reading the articles in the magazines.
Newspapers
Newspapers would work great for companies such as Snap Fitness and Curves for Women. These companies would be interested in reaching only their target market in specific areas where they are located. This would be the specific cities where they have their fitness centers in. They would not be interested in advertising all over the place; it would be a waste of money.
This would keep their costs down because they wouldn’t be wasting their money on advertisements where their fitness centers weren’t. People who couldn’t use their fitness centers wouldn’t be interested in their advertisements. So if they only had fitness centers in one city, they would only advertise in this city’s newspaper.

Country Music Radio Station
I chose WYTE (96.7) as my radio station because I am an avid country music fan. I enjoy listening to Mark and Ken with Kelli in the morning. WYTE has quite a bit of information on their website. They have a Superstar Listening club, which entitles their listeners to many different kinds of contests where they can win stuff, from cash to concert tickets.
I believe WYTE takes pride in their radio station and keeps the content over the air and on their website, family friendly. WYTE is very conscious about keeping their listeners up to date on any emergency situations. These are the concepts, which made me choose this station to post to my web.
My Thoughts On The Concept Of Radio Advertising
I do believe that radio advertising is a great way for many companies to get their message across. However, I do believe it all depends on who their target market is. I do not believe that companies selling children items would do very well using radio advertising. I only say this because of experience with having children. None of my children have ever asked me to buy them something they heard about over the radio. However, TV advertising is a great place for companies to sell their children related products.
As for the Super Bowl...I chose this one because I drink Pepsi. I really wasn't as impressed this year as I have been in past years. Many of the commercials were great. However, some were really lame and should not be airing during that time. I believe there are many children who watch the Super Bowl with their parents, and some of the commercials I saw this year did not impress me. So yes, for some businesses, I believe spending the extra money is well worth it.
Chapter 11-Question 11 (Page 373)
Satellite radio
IPODS
Podcasting
HD radio
Internet
Cell phones with MP3 player built in
The above new technologies are impacting the amount of radio people are listening to. All of the above technologies are allowing people to download their favorite songs. Many people will change channels if they do not like a song or if they don’t feel like listening to commercials. Utilizing these technologies allow people to listen to music without any commercials interfering with their listening.
Radio stations are decreasing the amount of advertisements that they are allowing to run per day. As a result, radio stations are allowing themselves to almost triple the amount of songs they play each day.
They are using the “Jack” format that was created by the IPOD. The “Jack” format is when a radio station will shuffle all their songs for the day and play them at random.
Even though the above new technologies are impacting them, researchers say that terrestrial radio still reaches almost 94% of their audience.
Radio stations that upgrade to HD radio are able to increase their capabilities. Even though radio listening is stable at the present time, the amount of people listening to the radio is slowly declining. By using HD radio, radio stations will have better quality and will be able to provide their audience with a lot more channels.
I researched the internet and found the following results. Some larger radio stations are selling their station, and turning into privately owned stations. Some radio stations are merging with others. Furthermore, radio stations upgrading to HD are realizing that the high cost of upgrading will be worth it in the end. Radio stations are also realizing that they need to be on top of all new technologies by doing research about their target markets’ perferences.
With upgrades, radio stations are able to provide their audiences with better and faster service. Many radio stations are performing surveys to see what their audiences want. One radio station found out that their audience level decreased by 27%.
