Chapter 17 Blog (Question #3)

Yes, I do believe they are examples of designed strategies which could work well for a company as long as the company keeps in mind what their audience is going to want. What the company thinks is good may not be so good to their audience.

For instance, the Janet Jackson incident. I believe would hurt FOX News’ reputation because many families watch the Super Bowl together and I sure wouldn’t want my children being exposed to that type of advertising. Although, I do believe the GoDaddy.com commercial shouldn’t have been banned the second time because it was not out to hurt anyone so I don’t quite know what FOX News was thinking, especially after they used the woman in the commercial for their own commercial. I believe their decision not to air it a second time did not hurt GoDaddy.com in the least bit. GoDaddy.com seemed to have a good reputation and they have seemed as though they generated enough publicity in the commercial air time the first time around.

I do believe that since the Janet Jackson incident, FOX News’ reputation has taken a dive. So using designed strategies, like approval of commercial first is a good step in the right decision.

Examples

WWE Wrestling- I believe they use design strategies when it come to any of their wrestlers who have been suspended. When this happens, they stop advertising about them on their website. This also happened when one of their wrestlers committed suicide and they took him off of all their advertisements and stopped selling his clothes on their website. I believe they do this so their audience can still have their favorite wrestler and not have to have negative thoughts about him. This especially works well for their young audience; they do not need to hear any of the adult content that deals with their favorite wrestlers.

I found an interesting article on dui.com. In the article, Tennessee’s Senator wants to ban all advertisements for Attorneys whose specialty is defending drunk drivers. These attorneys guarantee their clients that they will get them off of the charges against them. The Senator feels this is giving the attorney’s clients false hope. It is also letting people know that if they do get caught, nothing will happen to them.

Here is the website that the article can be found at:

I thought of one other example of designed strategies about cable networks banning the advertisements for smoking on their network. I believe this works well for children’s cable networks because they are not allowing children to assume that smoking is good for them. As I recall there are no commercials for cigarettes on any type of network; however, I do remember seeing one that explain the risks about smoking. I believe this works well because there are so many businesses who once allowed smoking in their building but now they don’t. This does sometimes work in their favorite, but some businesses like taverns and restaurants, I believe take a hit because many people smoke after they eat or while they are drinking.
